San Francisco based shoe retailer, Allbirds, have recently launched their eco-friendly Wool Runner, a sneaker that’s made from merino wool. This shoe is a combination of style and sustainability that aims to provide the activewear lover with a one-of-a-kind easy to maintain sneaker. It’s minimalist and quite attractive, the opposite of the stereotype that eco-friendly products aren’t fashion forward.
It’s design allows for it to be worn in more areas of life that aren’t fitness related, much like most athleisure apparel nowadays. Allbirds promises that the shoes are soft enough to go sans socks but also set to minimize odor as well as providing a low carbon footprint. Made from merino wool from New Zealand, the runners come in 4 colors, grey, red, blue and a deep green for a very affordable $95.

According to their website, merino wool is 20% the diameter of human hair that is what allows for the fabric to be so breathable and itch-free. The shoe also has a lightweight sole made from foam and rubber paired with a Ortholite® polyurethane padded insole. The goal of the company is to be as ethical and sustainable as possible, not harming the sheep and using natural textiles. The Allbirds merino wool also has a 60% smaller carbon footprint than the regular synthetic materials used to produce shoes. This shoe is the first of its kind and will lead the way for more ethically made, sustainable athleisure products. It can be purchased online here. |
