Exhibit: The Rise of Sneaker Culture
The High Museum of Art in Atlanta is holding the exhibit The Rise of Sneaker Culture from June 11 through August 14 focusing on the social and historical impacts of sneakers. For some they might be just shoes but in reality this footwear has grown to have a cult following of die hard sneaker heads. Within the exhibition are approximately 150 pairs of shoes that will be on display next to film footage, photographs and interactive media.
The exhibit focuses on more than just the fashion of sneakers but their social and cultural impacts. Artwork from Damien Hirst and Shantell Martin can be seen to help amplify their significance in the modern world.
Sneakers came about from modest beginnings out of necessity and have become fashion staples. Archived pieces from manufacturers such as adidas, Nike, Puma to the private collections of Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, sneaker guru Bobbito Garcia, and Dee Wells of Obsessive Sneaker Disorder. Even high end designers such as Louis Vuitton, Pierre Hardy and Christian Louboutin have developed their own sneakers.
This exhibit is a must see for those who love this type of footwear or those who want to know more about their historical and technological advancements.

For those who still aren't satisfied with just an exhibit, there is now a college course dedicated to sneaker culture. North Carolina’s Johnson C. Smith University English 296 course is taught by the author of Sole Food: Digestible Sneaker Culture, Jemayne King. While the class is technically an English class, the theme is centered around sneakers in hopes of getting the students attention. Further proof that sneakers have become bigger than just stylish footwear.
